How to remember 分

Eight (八, splitting apart) + knife (刀) — cutting something into two pieces with a knife. Divide an hour and you get minutes; share knowledge by dividing it and you come to understand it — that's why 分かる means 'to understand'. ３０分 (thirty minutes), 自分 (oneself) — one kanji, three jobs.
