How long does it take to learn hiragana?

Most learners can read all of hiragana within one to two weeks of daily practice, and write it from memory in three to four. Writing each character by hand — not just recognising it — is what makes the difference.

Should I learn hiragana or katakana first?

Hiragana, without question. It carries all of Japanese grammar, so you need it for every sentence you will ever read. Katakana is mostly used for loanwords and can wait until hiragana is comfortable.

How many hiragana characters are there?

46 basic characters, plus 25 formed by adding dakuten (゛) or handakuten (゜) — 71 in total, which is what this chart covers. All 71 appear on the JLPT N5.

Do I need to learn hiragana stroke order?
