Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means だけ means "only" or "just." It limits something to exactly one item, one amount, or one person, and rules out everything else.
## When to use it Attach だけ right after the word it limits, whether that's a noun, an amount, or a time expression: [Noun/Amount] + だけ. For example, 水だけ飲みました means "I only drank water."
## Don't confuse it with しか also means "only," but しか always needs a negative verb at the end, while だけ does not. リンゴだけ食べます and リンゴしか食べません both mean "I only eat apples," but the grammar around them is different, so don't pair しか with a positive verb.
今日は水だけ飲みました。
Today I only drank water.
教室に学生が一人だけいます。
There's only one student in the classroom.
お金が千円だけあります。
I only have a thousand yen.
日曜日だけ休みです。
I'm only off on Sundays.
肉は少しだけ食べます。
I'll only eat a little bit of meat.
宿題はこれだけですか。
Is this all the homework there is?
彼は英語だけ話せます。
He can only speak English.
時間が五分だけ残っています。
There are only five minutes left.
