Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means これ、それ、あれ mean "this," "that," and "that one over there." They let you point at a thing without having to name it out loud.
## When to use it **これ** is for something close to you, **それ** is for something close to the person you're talking to, and **あれ** is for something far from both of you. They stand on their own as the subject of a sentence, so you don't need any extra noun: これ は ペン です ("This is a pen"). Just follow the pattern は + Noun + です.
## Don't confuse it with Don't mix these up with **この・その・あの**, which must sit directly in front of a noun, like この ペン ("this pen"). これ・それ・あれ never attach to a noun this way — you can't say これペン. If you want to describe a specific noun, switch to この・その・あの instead.
これは本です。
This is a book.
それは辞書ですか。
Is that a dictionary?
あれは山田さんの車です。
That over there is Mr. Yamada's car.
これは私の傘じゃありません。
This isn't my umbrella.
それは何ですか。
What is that?
あれは郵便局です。
That building over there is the post office.
これは新しい携帯です。
This is a new phone.
それは田中さんのかばんですか。
