JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means This でも offers **one example** from a whole category, instead of pinning someone down to one exact choice. お茶でもどうですか means 'how about tea, or something like that?' — softer and more casual than asking for tea specifically.
## When to use it Attach でも directly after a **noun**, then finish with something like どうですか, しませんか, or 飲みませんか. It works great for casual invitations, since it shows you're flexible and not forcing a single option on the other person.
## Don't confuse it with This is a completely different job from the でも that means 'but' at the start of a sentence (でも、雨が降っています。 = 'But it's raining.'). Here, でも attaches directly to a noun in the middle of a sentence rather than starting a new one. A common mistake is trying to attach でも to a verb instead of a noun.
