JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means がほしいです means **"I want [a thing]."** You say it when you want an object, not when you want to do something.
## When to use it Attach it after a noun with the particle が: Noun + が + ほしいです. ほしい works exactly like an **い-adjective**, so it changes the same way: ほしいです (want), ほしくないです (don't want), ほしかったです (wanted), ほしくなかったです (didn't want). It's mainly used to talk about your own wants, or to ask someone else with ほしいですか.
## Don't confuse it with Don't mix this up with 〜たいです, which is for wanting to **do** something, not wanting a **thing**. 水がほしいです means "I want water" (a thing), while 水を飲みたいです means "I want to drink water" (an action). Also watch the particle: it's が, not を — many beginners try 水をほしいです, but that's incorrect.
