〜がわかります

## What it means わかります means "to understand" or "to get it" — like when something clicks in your head. が marks the thing that you do or don't understand.

## When to use it Put the thing being understood before が, then add わかります: 日本語がわかります ("I understand Japanese"). For "I don't understand," change it to わかりません. わかります is one of those verbs that almost always pairs with が rather than を, even though it feels like it should take an object.

## Don't confuse it with Beginners often mix up わかります with **知っています** (to know). わかります is about understanding or comprehending something in the moment — a language, an explanation, someone's feelings. 知っています is about knowing a fact or piece of information you already have stored away, like a name or an address. You'd say 道がわかりません for "I don't know/understand the way" right now, but 彼の名前を知っています for "I know his name" as a stored fact.
