## What it means **ましょうか** means "shall I...?" or "shall we...?" It's a polite way to offer to do something for someone, or to suggest doing something together and check if they agree.

## When to use it Take the polite ます-form of a verb, drop ます, and add **ましょうか**. For example, 持ちます (carry) becomes 持ちましょうか ("shall I carry it?"). It works both for offers (something you'll do for someone) and for suggestions (something you'll do together), and the listener can simply reply with はい、お願いします (yes, please) or いいえ、大丈夫です (no, it's okay).

## Don't confuse it with Don't confuse ましょうか with **ましょう** or **ませんか**. ましょう ("let's...") is a direct proposal without asking — 行きましょう means "let's go". ませんか ("won't you...?") is a gentle invitation that leaves the choice entirely up to the other person — 行きませんか means "would you like to go?" ましょうか sits in between: it's a question that offers or proposes, inviting a yes/no answer.
