JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means **もう〜ましたか** means "have you already done...?" It's how you ask whether something has happened yet.
## When to use it Put もう before the ました-form (past polite form) of the verb, then add か to make it a question: もう晩ご飯を食べましたか means "have you already eaten dinner?" There are two natural ways to answer: if it's done, say はい、もう〜ました ("yes, I already did..."); if it isn't done yet, say いいえ、まだです ("no, not yet").
## Don't confuse it with A common mistake is answering "not yet" with まだ〜ませんでした, which sounds awkward here. The natural short answer for "not yet" is simply **いいえ、まだです**, without repeating the verb at all.
