JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means な-adjectives are another group of describing words — things like げんき (energetic), しずか (quiet), or ゆうめい (famous). Unlike the other adjective group, the word itself never changes shape. Instead, です does all the work of showing tense and politeness.
## When to use it Use です for the present (しずかです, "is quiet"), でした for the past (しずかでした, "was quiet"), じゃありません for the negative (しずかじゃありません, "is not quiet"), and じゃなかったです for the past negative. The only time you'll see **な** attached is when the adjective sits directly in front of a noun, like しずかな部屋 ("a quiet room"). No noun right after it means no な.
## Don't confuse it with This is the mirror image of い-adjectives. い-adjectives change their own ending (おいしい → おいしかった) and never take な before a noun. な-adjectives never change their own ending — です changes instead — and they do take な before a noun. Mixing the two up, like saying しずかいです or おいしいな部屋, is one of the most common early mistakes.
