JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means This pattern means "must ~" or "have to ~". It describes something you're required to do, no matter how you personally feel about it.
## When to use it Start with the **nai-form** of the verb, drop the final い, and add ければなりません. 行かない → 行かなければなりません ("must go"). It sounds a bit stiff, so in casual speech people often shorten it to なきゃ, but なければなりません is the safe, standard form to learn first.
## Don't confuse it with This is the opposite of **〜なくてもいいです** ("don't have to ~"). なければなりません says the action is required; なくてもいいです says it's optional. Beginners sometimes forget that both patterns start from the nai-form, so it helps to build the nai-form first and then decide which ending to attach.
