〜にあげます

## What it means あげます means "to give". **に** marks the person who receives the gift — the one you're giving something to.

## When to use it The pattern is **Person + に + Thing + を + あげます**. For example, 友達にプレゼントをあげます means "I'll give my friend a present" — 友達 (friend) is marked by に as the receiver, and プレゼント (present) is marked by を as the thing given.

## Don't confuse it with Don't mix up に and を here: **に** always marks the *person* receiving something, while **を** always marks the *thing* being given. A common slip is putting に on the object instead of the person. Also note あげます is normally used when giving to someone else, not to yourself — for someone giving something to *you*, Japanese uses くれます or もらいます instead.
