〜にもらいます

## What it means もらいます means "to receive" or "to get". **に** (or **から**) marks the person who gave you the thing — where it came from.

## When to use it The pattern is **Person + に/から + Thing + を + もらいます**. For example, 友達にプレゼントをもらいました means "I got a present from my friend". から works the same way and is often used when the giver feels a bit more distant or formal, like a company: 会社から手紙をもらいました ("I got a letter from the company").

## Don't confuse it with もらいます is the mirror image of **あげます**: あげます is used by the giver ("I give to someone"), while もらいます is used by the receiver ("I get from someone"). Compare 友達にプレゼントをあげます ("I give my friend a present") with 友達にプレゼントをもらいます ("I get a present from my friend") — same people and thing, but the direction, and the role that に marks, is reversed.
