JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means This pattern describes a **change** — something going from one state to another, like weather turning cold, a person becoming a teacher, or a room becoming quiet.
## When to use it For **nouns** and **な-adjectives**, add **に** before なります (先生になります, 静かになります). For **い-adjectives**, drop the final い and add **く** before なります (寒い→寒くなります). Use なりました for something that already changed, and なりません for something that won't change.
## Don't confuse it with Don't confuse になります with **にします**, which means someone deliberately makes something that way (部屋を静かにします = 'I'll make the room quiet'), while になります describes a change happening on its own, without anyone forcing it. A common slip-up is attaching に to an い-adjective instead of switching it to く first.
