〜てあげます

## What it means てあげます means you do something for someone else as a favor. The focus is on **you** giving your help or action to another person.

## When to use it Attach あげます to the **て-form** of a verb: 手伝ってあげます ('I'll help them out'). It fits naturally when the other person is a friend, someone younger, or someone of equal or lower status than you. Past tense is てあげました; negative is てあげません.

## Don't confuse it with Be careful using てあげます toward teachers, bosses, or anyone above you, it can sound a little prideful, like you're doing them a favor from a position of superiority. Toward people you respect, it's safer to just describe the action politely without てあげます. Also don't mix this up with てもらいます and てくれます (covered next), which describe the same kind of favor but from the receiver's side.
