JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means ています describes an action that is happening **right now**, in this exact moment — like the English "-ing" in "I am eating."
## When to use it Attach います to the **て-form** of a verb: 食べる → 食べて + います → 食べています (is eating). It's often paired with 今 (now) to make the meaning extra clear: 今、雨が降っています (it's raining right now). To ask what someone is doing at this moment, use 何をしていますか (what are you doing?).
## Don't confuse it with The same ています shape is also used for an ongoing state after a one-time change, like 結婚しています (is married) or 窓が開いています (the window is open) — that's a different, more advanced use, so for now just focus on the "action in progress" meaning shown here. Also don't confuse ています with plain ます: 食べます just states a fact or future plan ("I will eat" / "I eat"), while 食べています means the eating is happening right now.
