JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means This is the same ~ています you already know, but here it describes an **ongoing state, job, or fact about someone's life** — not something happening right this second. For example, "I am married" or "I work at a bank."
## When to use it Attach います to the **te-form** of certain verbs — especially ones like 結婚する (get married), 住む (live), and 働く (work) — to describe a lasting situation rather than a one-time action. 結婚しています means "I am married," and 東京に住んでいます means "I live in Tokyo."
## Don't confuse it with This looks identical to the ~ています you use for something happening right now, like 食べています ("I'm eating"). The difference comes from the verb's meaning: verbs describing a one-time change (結婚する, 住む) become an ongoing **state** with ています, while action verbs describe something in progress. The type of verb tells you which meaning is intended.
