JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means This is how you describe **doing several things one after another** in a single sentence, like "I get up, take a shower, and eat breakfast," instead of making three separate sentences.
## When to use it Change every verb except the last one into its **te-form**, and keep only the final verb in its normal ~ます form. For example: 起きて、シャワーを浴びて、朝ごはんを食べます. The actions are understood to happen in the order you list them.
## Don't confuse it with This looks similar to てから (covered separately), which also links actions with te-form. The difference is emphasis: plain te-form chaining just lists actions happening one after another, while てから stresses that the first action must finish before the next one starts. A common mistake is putting ます on every verb in the chain instead of only the last one.
