JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means てもらいます means someone else does something for you, and the focus is on **you receiving** that help, like 'I got my friend to explain it to me'.
## When to use it Attach もらいます to the **て-form** of a verb, and mark the helper with に: 友達に手伝ってもらいました ('I had my friend help me'). It works whether you specifically asked for the favor or it just happened to help you. Past tense is てもらいました; negative is てもらいません.
## Don't confuse it with てもらいます and てくれます (covered next) both describe someone helping you, but the difference is subtle: てもらいます puts **you** in the spotlight as the one receiving help, while てくれます puts the **other person's kindness** in the spotlight. Also remember the helper is marked with に, not が.
