JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means Use this to share your own **opinion or guess** — something like 'I think it'll rain' or 'I think she's kind.' It's a polite, natural way to say what you personally believe, without sounding too certain.
## When to use it Attach **と思います** right after the **plain form** of a verb, adjective, or noun. For nouns and な-adjectives, keep the だ before と (親切だと思います). Use と思いました for a past opinion, and よ or ね can soften it further in casual speech.
## Don't confuse it with Don't mix this up with **〜と言います**, which reports words someone actually said out loud. と思います is always about your own silent thoughts, while と言います quotes real speech. A common mistake is attaching と思います to a polite です/ます form instead of the plain form underneath it.
