JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means はどうですか means "how is ~?" or "what do you think about ~?" It's the go-to phrase for asking someone's opinion or impression of something.
## When to use it Attach は right after the topic you're asking about, then add どうですか: 味はどうですか ("how does it taste?"). For something in the past, swap in どうでしたか: 旅行はどうでしたか ("how was the trip?"). This phrase works for food, weather, experiences, someone's health — almost anything you can react to.
## Don't confuse it with Beginners sometimes reach for なんですか ("what is it?") when they actually want an opinion. なんですか asks for a fact or identity; はどうですか asks for a feeling or judgment about something both people already know about. If you're asking "what did you think?" rather than "what is it?", どうですか is the one you want.
