JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means **を** shows the thing that a verb is acting on — what you eat, drink, watch, or buy. Think of it as pointing at the target of the action.
## When to use it Put **を** right after the noun for the thing being acted on, then follow it with the verb: **Noun + を + Verb**. For example, パンを食べます means "I eat bread" — パン (bread) is the thing being eaten. You can use を with almost any action verb: 飲みます (drink), 見ます (watch), 買います (buy), 読みます (read), and more.
## Don't confuse it with Beginners often mix up **を** with **は** and **が**. **は** marks the topic of the sentence (what you're talking about), and **が** often marks who or what does something or exists. **を** never marks the doer — it always marks the thing being affected by the action. In 私はパンを食べます, 私 (I) is marked by は as the topic, and パン (bread) is marked by を as the thing eaten.
