〜を知っています

## What it means 知っています means "I know" — you know a fact, a place, or a person. It's about already having a piece of information in your head, not about knowing how to do something.

## When to use it Attach を to the thing you know, then use 知っています. So 田中さんを知っています means "I know Mr. Tanaka." The tricky part is the negative: "I don't know" is 知りません, NOT 知っていません. This verb breaks the usual ~ています pattern.

## Don't confuse it with Beginners often say 知っていません for "I don't know," copying the pattern from other ています verbs — but that sounds unnatural. Always use 知りません instead. It's also worth keeping 知っています separate from わかります ("to understand/figure out"): 知っています is about already having information, while わかります is about understanding something you just heard or worked out.
