JLPT N5 · Grammar
Highlighted parts are the fixed pieces of the pattern; the rest changes with the word you attach it to.
## What it means や connects a couple of examples from a longer list without naming everything. It's like saying "things like A and B" in English, when there could be more items you're not mentioning.
## When to use it Use it between nouns, A や B, and optionally add など at the end to mean "and so on." や only connects nouns, not verbs or adjectives.
## Don't confuse it with と also connects nouns, but と lists everything completely. かばんに本とノートがあります means the bag has exactly a book and a notebook, nothing else. かばんに本やノートがあります means the bag has things like a book and a notebook, plus possibly other stuff too.
